WSfG celebrates Languages Day

This week the Languages faculty hosted a range of activities to celebrate Languages Day.

The faculty encouraged all teachers to tell students about the languages they speak. Staff were provided with a badge for the language they spoke in order to provoke conversations about languages, culture and the rich diversity we celebrate at our school.

Ms Flaender (Head of French) organised a Languages Day treasure hunt for Years 7-9. Posters were displayed around the school with facts about languages and students had until Friday to complete the activity sheet. The faculty were impressed with the number of students that completed the treasure hunt and all students who entered will receive Green Points.

Year 7 tutor groups participated in a "Find someone who" competition. Students had to ask language specific questions to their teachers during the day to complete this activity. For example, find the teacher who has lived in another country. The winning group were the first group to complete the activity and hand it in to the Languages faculty office. The winning tutor group will be announced in assembly next week and receive a prize!

Years 10 and 11 were invited to participate in a Latin Treasure hunt organised by Ms Cheetham. There were 24 Latin root-words displayed on posters around the school. Students were asked to bring a list with the Latin roots and at least one related English word that they could take from the posters. For example, Root word: ben (means good) Related English word: benefit BONUS FRENCH WORD: bien.

On Thursday, tutor groups took part on a Languages Day Form Quiz organised by Mr Polo where students were tested on their knowledge of languages and cultures. Mr Polo will be rewarded the winning form from each year group with prizes next week!

The canteen also supported in celebrating the day by creating a special Languages Day menu including:

Beef Tagine with a choice of Arabic rice OR aromatic cous cous

Chicken Biryani with pakoras or Nan

Chicken shawarma wrap with minted yoghurt and wedges

Vegetarian sticky Hoi sin noodles

Caribbean spiced pineapple cake with custard

The highlight of the week had to be WSfG’s annual ‘Great Languages Bake Off’ competition. Students were asked to pick a country of their choice and bake a cake at home that represents that country. These could be decorated with flags, words, monuments and even more! Students baked the cakes at home and this year were able to bring their cakes into school to be judged. Students were given the option to take their cake back home to enjoy or donate it to the staff annual Macmillan Coffee Morning. The Languages faculty were overwhelmed by the fantastic array of cakes. Green points were awarded for all entries. Ms Marriott and the faculty had the very tough decision of judging the entries in order to find the star bakers!
