Welcome to Art

In the Art department at Walthamstow School for Girls we feel that our students should be given the opportunity to develop their creative skills in order to appreciate the visual world around them. Through the diverse projects and themes, the art department aims to enhance students’ cultural awareness, encourage and nurture artistic confidence and develop their creative and critical thinking.

As a department we very much want students’ art experience to excite and challenge them creatively as well as develop social, interpersonal and communicative skills.

Curriculum at KS3

At Key Stage 3 students have one hour per week to study Art, and complete 3 projects over the year. All units explore a diverse range of skills, techniques, approaches to the visual arts and are supported by contextual studies (the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople) throughout.

Curriculum at KS4

At Key Stage 4 we offer Fine Art which follows the EDEXCEL syllabus. GCSE Art is assessed as two units of work; the personal portfolio and the ESA (externally set assignment). Students will have the opportunity to experiment with different media in order to explore their strengths and preferences. There are a wide range of approaches within the Fine Art syllabus on which to focus including painting and drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography and mixed media. The main aim of the course is to develop their visual language skills and to build a comprehensive portfolio of work to progress to further courses or employment.
